Tomatoes, Broccoli, Peppers… Oh my!
Certainly sounds like a feast of veggies, at least that’s the hope in about 2-3 months. This past Wednesday evening in celebration of Earth Month, Hillel members spent a couple of hours creating and planting a plethora of veggies in our new community garden! When deciding how exactly we should construct the garden, Stephanie consulted some co-workers and online resources. The base of the garden isn’t tilled (apparently, that’s just an age-old tradition which isn’t quite necessary), instead the foundation consists of recycled cardboard boxes, layers of soil, organic dried blood and pine needles to help repel those determined rabbits and squirrels! Next, we diligently planted several different plant varietals such as tomatoes, green peppers, sweet potatoes, cilantro and even some soul soothing Forget-Me Nots. In the end it sort of resembles a cake, layers of soil topped with tasty treats with a lot of love put into it! Here’s to hoping there’s a large feast at the end of this endeavor, or least throughout the summer!
